Top 3 Reasons Why Keyless Locking Devices are the Best Choice for Rotating Applications

Keyless Locking Devices

Keyless Locking Devices (KLDs) are mechanical bushings used to connect power transmission components onto rotating shafts. KLDs work with straight bore and generous tolerances, reducing component machining and complexity cost. In addition, KLDs are installed and removed using simple hand tools; no heat or high forces are required. The top 3 reasons why PT customers prefer keyless locking devices over traditional mounting methods are:

Reason #1—Keyless Locking Devices eliminate the problems associated with backlash including fretting, corroding and wallowing

Traditional methods used to mount mechanical power transmission components incorporate the use of gears and keyways. Over time, these keyed connections begin to deteriorate, causing components to: become out of sync, damage the shafting and result in consequent maintenance issues and downtime. Production and profitability of the factory are ultimately affected.  KLDs eliminate the need for keyed connections, while providing the both the necessary torque capacity and a desired safety factor.

Reason #2—Keyless Locking Devices tolerate the transmission of high torque, thrust and bending loads

KLDs use tapered rings that work like wedges to convert locking screw clamp loads into radial contact pressure. As the screws are tightened, the wedges draw together to tighten down on the shaft, as well as expand into the hut of the component. When the specified screw tightening torque is reached the predetermined load capacity is achieved offering a 360° clamping force that will not damage the shaft or component. This connection is capable of transmitting high torque, thrust and bending loads.

Reason #3—Keyless Locking Devices are easily mounted, adjusted, and removed in the field using standard hand tools

Eliminating the use of keyways, KLDs provide for an infinite angular and axial positioning for precise alignment and timing. Since they require only the use of standard hand tools, keyless locking devices are easily mounted, adjusted, and removed in the field, requiring limited downtime and extending the life of the shaft and components.

In what applications should a Keyless Locking Device be used?

Keyless locking devices with their simplicity and ease of use are the best choice for connecting components onto shafting. They can replace traditional connection methods in the following industries:

  • Packaging Machinery
  • Conveyors & Conveying Equipment
  • Steel Works, Blast Furnaces & Rolling Mills
