IBT-Sedalia Celebrates 30 Years in Business

With a Big Renovation, New Address—and a Party!

33 years ago, IBT opened a new branch in Sedalia, Missouri. Today, the company is celebrating its anniversary with a $500,000 renovation—and a Customer Appreciation & Technology Expo.

Richard Finch, the Store Manager at IBT—Sedalia, has been with the company since opening day on May 1, 1980. He said that working there is still as much fun as it was 33 years ago—and the new renovation makes it even better. The branch now has 11 employees, including Finch.

“I enjoy the people, and I enjoy the company,” Finch said. “I love to answer questions, or help someone find the right product. It’s that fun opportunity to turn a customer challenge into a positive buying experience. That’s why I stick with it.”

Totally New Space + New Address

In 2012, IBT completed a total overhaul of the Sedalia branch, moving it to a new building 100 yards away, at 414 N. State Fair Boulevard. The renovation expanded the worksite to 9,000 sq. ft. and added new office and warehouse space.

Employees and customers alike are excited about the new space, which offers faster, easier checkout—and access to over 2,500+ everyday in-stock items, plus 250,000+ products for order.

“The new building is like a breath of fresh air,” said Finch. “Everyone is so excited to come to work every day.”

Finch said that feedback from customers has been extremely positive so far. “I’ve heard a lot of comments to the effect of, ‘Wow, you really did this right,” he laughed. “We worked at the old building for thirty years—now we’re all ready for 30 more.”

Thousands of Customers Each Year

The IBT—Sedalia branch handles several thousand customers every year. Some come to the store, while others hire IBT to service their onsite locations.

Terry Elwell has worked with IBT—Sedalia for over 20 years. As the MRO/Facility Maintenance Coordinator for EnerSys, he manages the MRO store operations, as well as buildings and grounds facilities.

“IBT provides reliable and prompt service that is vital to our maintenance organization, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” Elwell said. He added that he routinely uses IBT—Sedalia for motion power products and laser alignment, and appreciates the long-term partnership with their employees.

“Their staff is very knowledgeable, and they probably know our parts better than we do,” Elwell said with a laugh. “We like that service.”

“It’s all about uptime,” Finch said. “Our business is all about having the right part to keep their machines up and running, sometimes 24/7.”

IBT has regular customers as far as 45 miles outside of Sedalia, a town of population 21,000. They provide parts and services to EnerSys, Maxion Wheels, Waterloo Industries, Tyson Foods, Pittsburgh Corning, Wire Rope Corp. —and more.

“For such a small community, we have an incredibly diverse economic base here,” Finch said. He added that customers appreciate that they offer so many parts in such a small town.

“Customers don’t want to drive all around town, or call three places to find the part they need,” Finch said. “They know when they come here, they’ll get what they need the first time—plus someone to help them who knows what they’re talking about. Their time is valuable, and we respect that.”

Close Community Relationships

Employees enjoy working at IBT—Sedalia because of the unique opportunity for close relationships with the clients.

“Everybody here in Sedalia knows everybody,” Finch said. “You see your customers at the store, then later out in public. It’s nice to be able to do business with people who are also friends and neighbors.”

Chris Martin, an Outside Sales Representative, has worked at IBT—Sedalia for over 18 years. He often works directly with customers at their worksites. Martin said he likes the variety, the challenges of helping a customer manage their inventory better, or create a new material handling solution.

“Every day is a new adventure,” Martin said. “There’s no boring old 8-5 here. It’s always a new and different challenge to solve and we’re always on the go.”

Customer Appreciation & Technology Expo

To celebrate their renovation and grand re-opening, IBT—Sedalia is hosting a Customer Appreciation & Technology Expo on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. — 2:00 p.m.

The event features a free lunch buffet from Kehde’s BBQ from 11:00 a.m. — 1:30 p.m., and 15 of IBT’s top suppliers will show off the latest technology and answer questions.  Prizes to be given away include:
